A survey of more than 400 hospitals and 1,400 doctors' offices found that visits have increased 31 percent in the past 10 years. The amount of time a patient waited for a physician in ER also increased from 38 minutes to 47 minutes between 1997 and 2004. The National Center for Health Statistics said the increase in visits only "partly reflects the 11 percent increase in the U.S. population, but people also were seeking care more often."
